Dog Tag Brewing - Now in CT!
While we tend to gravitate towards brews with the best reputation for taste profiles, Dog Tag Brewing is on another level. They are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit that teams up with Gold Star families - those that have lost loved ones in the line of duty - to fund grants for Legacy Building Initiatives. These are projects that will bear the name and legacy of those armed forces members that died serving their country. Dog Tag also provides free consulting services to Gold Star families that have started their own non-profits to carry out legacy projects. Most importantly, Dog Tag donates 100% of their royalties and after-tax profits to those Gold Star charities.
While Blood & Spirit is a passionate advocate for our military men and women, the questions remains...how's the beer? We had a chance to try the Legacy Lager while on a trip to Great Barrington, MA, and it certainly holds its own against everyday American brews like Yuengling and Pabst - the latter of which happens to produce and distribute Dog Tag beers. It's slightly more intense than the typically mellow pale lagers, with a grainier feel and more malt flavor than one might expect from a beer that is (ostensibly) more focused on the message than the product. There is also an IPA that appears to be more limited in its distribution, but with Dog Tag's expansion hopefully it will become available locally soon. Bottom line: it's better than expected and supports a great cause. What's not to love?
